Seeds and Harvest
Tamarack, watercolour on paper, 6 x 4 inches ©2020 Rami Schandall.
Autumn has been with us now for almost one month, but it is just in the past days that I see the colours really turning. My family walked in Rouge National Urban Park on Thanksgiving, a first visit for me. It is one of the largest urban parks in North America. How wondrous to be in the colour and smells — and quiet — of forest, within city boundaries…We saw the trees just beginning to change, the tamarack turning from bright green toward lemon. It has been so warm. In October 2020, in the thick of the pandemic, I painted this watercolour of woods in Packenham forest near Ottawa. That year, the tamarack were solid yellow by this time.
The first New Moon of Autumn occurs this week — and Happy Diwali for all who celebrate! What goodness would you call in at this time? I led an interfaith gathering a few weeks ago with a theme of offering and receiving, reflecting upon practices of generosity. Where we plant seeds of kindness, all may benefit from the harvest. What supports the seeds of your kindness?
The cycles of inspiration, practice, process and connection are fuel for creativity, and in my experience, giving and receiving, generosity and kindness, are similarly powerful fuel. One of the places where I experience this the most clearly is in gatherings of hearts and minds, writing, sounding, and sitting together. In the meditation class I lead at Mosaic on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm, we have found a sweet balance of expression and quiet, community and individuality — it is a “friendly” approach, with many strategies to connect peacefully within and without. If you have never joined us, you are welcome! And if you have joined us before, welcome back!
